Our dog can be a bit edgy when others pass by.
We have been noticing though, that whilst on a leash he barks, off the leash he doesn’t. At first, I thought the leash was just restraining him. But I realised it also protects him. He knows I’m ‘holding him back’, so he feels safe to put on a show. However without the leash, he assimilates to the environment more easily.
I’ve been thinking about this all week—life is full of leashes, isn’t it? Things that both restrain and protect: jobs, habits, family rules... Maybe recognising this dual purpose makes restraints easier to appreciate, and protections easier to not-cling-on-to.
