Here is a practice I find very helpful: rather than labelling things in absolutes, recognising things are made of different parts. For example:
- Rather than labelling X as selfish, I say he has selfish tendencies, is fun to be around and helps friends when his interests are not compromised.
- Rather than labelling the rainy day as bad I can say it had some bad parts when I got wet, ok parts when I was in the train commuting and a good moment when the client agreed with my proposal.
- Rather than labelling the pizza as amazing, I can say the flavour was amazing, the base fine and the size slightly small.
If I get into the habit of perceiving all things in parts then I am better equipped to deal with difficulties / challenges. Here is a perfect example I heard a couple of weeks ago: "I’m dreading the hospital appointment, but right now it’s just my thoughts that are bad. I’m at a bbq with family, so most of me in-fact is good."
