I may have a difficult conversation ahead of me, such as a negotiation, or delivering some bad news.
In preparation I may subconsciously be focusing inside, on how I feel.
Or, I may be focusing outside, that the purpose of this is greater than me: one could say that I am 'dropping self-importance'. Then I am more likely to succeed.
Easier said than done though, as it is happening in the background of a conversation, hence tricky to spot, let alone shift. Here, attention training such as with targeted mindfulness courses or CBT (Cognitive Based Therapy) can be very helpful. And of course, practice, practice, practice.
