You will find this interesting if you are familiar with the Wim Hof Method, a mind-training practice combining breathing techniques, cold water exposure and meditation.
An integral part of the WHM is taking cold showers or ice baths. For years I would immerse myself in as fast as I could, aiming to go past the first minute as quickly as possible so the shock and (sometimes) pain would subside.
Recently I discovered that this first moment can, in-fact, be a micro-playground for exploring the mind. What happens if I go in slowly, versus bluntly? Is there a difference if I make my body [language] loose and expanded versus tight? How is it that if welcome the experience the water feels warmer than if I am averse to it?
Indeed, it becomes an experiential learning ground for my relationship to challenge and difficulty.
Super interesting.
And energising too.
