Whilst I can’t say I love financial modelling in Excel, sometimes I find myself really immersed...
...with dozens of numeric variables neatly set out in my mind. Everything clicks, time loses its meaning and afterwards I’m surprised by my efficiency. I have realised now, that in these instances I enter the ‘flow state’.
According to Wikipedia (Jul 2020), “A flow state, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.”
I believe that most of us have such experiences to varying degrees and in all sorts of situations, including extreme sports, music or cooking. I would love to train myself to be in this state more frequently.
Currently there is a lot of R&D on the 'Flow State', lead by exponents of peak-performance and I believe that our grandchildren will be able to access it regularly and at will. If you’re curious, here is a link to an interesting initiative I’ve come across, the “Flow Genome Project”.
